Ethereum Completes First Atomic L1-to-L2 Transaction on Mainnet

Ethereum’s Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) has completed what its contributors describe as the first atomic cross-chain transaction from Ethereum Layer 1 to a Layer 2 network on mainnet.
The test transferred 0.001 ETH while synchronizing the L1 transaction and L2 state update so that both actions either completed together or reverted together. This demonstrates a potential way for Ethereum applications to interact across layers without relying on separate bridge transactions and waiting periods.
Developed by Gnosis and Zisk with support from the Ethereum Foundation, EEZ aims to reduce liquidity fragmentation and make Ethereum’s growing network of Layer 2s operate more like a unified ecosystem. The project still has significant development ahead, including two-way cross-layer calls and real-time zero-knowledge proving, with further upgrades planned through 2027. If successfully scaled, the technology could make moving assets and interacting with applications across Ethereum networks faster and more seamless.
