Global Recognition: Pew Survey Highlights China’s Economic Impact in 35 Nations
A recent Pew Research Center survey across 35 countries underscores China’s substantial economic influence. Revealing varied perceptions based on income levels.
Conducted from January 5 to May 21, the survey gathered insights from 44,166 respondents in countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Germany, India, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Korea, and the United States. In middle-income nations, 47% view China’s influence positively, contrasting with 29% negatively. Conversely, 57% of respondents from high-income countries express negative views, with only 28% holding positive perceptions. Criticism towards China’s economic impact is particularly pronounced in the United States, where approximately 75% view it negatively.
Over recent years, negative sentiments have grown in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Israel, Japan, South Korea, and Tunisia. Concerns persist in middle-income countries regarding environmental and labor standards despite some appreciation for Chinese businesses. In the Asia-Pacific region, territorial disputes involving China, notably with the Philippines, are significant sources of concern. Views on China’s role in global peace and stability vary, with Southeast Asian countries generally more favorable compared to critical perspectives from Australia, Japan, and South Korea.
