Crime Syndicates Exploit Crypto and Blockchain for Multibillion-Dollar Activities, UN Says

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) warns that organized crime syndicates are increasingly using cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to expand their operations.

In Southeast Asia, criminal groups are creating illicit financial ecosystems, including unlicensed exchanges and stablecoins, to evade detection and launder money. These operations have extended to online gambling, encrypted communications, and even illicit marketplaces. The UN calls for stronger international cooperation and regulatory frameworks to combat this growing threat.

As these syndicates continue to scale profits and influence, generating billions in illicit capital that fuels further expansion and supports global money laundering activities.
