BlackRock Files for New Bitcoin ETF Designed to Limit Investor Losses

BlackRock has filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (PBIT), a new investment product designed to provide Bitcoin exposure while reducing potential losses during market downturns.

Unlike traditional spot Bitcoin ETFs, the proposed fund would use options contracts linked to BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) alongside fixed-income investments rather than holding Bitcoin directly. The strategy targets an initial loss threshold of approximately 10% for individual options positions, although this does not guarantee a maximum loss for investors.

The proposed ETF would combine three overlapping options positions to balance potential gains with downside protection, while limiting returns during strong Bitcoin rallies. BlackRock aims to offer investors a more risk-managed alternative to direct Bitcoin exposure as demand for diversified cryptocurrency investment products grows. However, the fund remains subject to regulatory requirements, and investors could still experience significant losses depending on market conditions. The filing highlights the continued expansion of Bitcoin investment products as traditional asset managers develop new strategies to address cryptocurrency volatility.
