Solana Unveils New Consensus Upgrade to Boost Speed and Lower Latency

Solana has unveiled a major upgrade to its consensus protocol called Alpenglow, aiming to significantly boost network performance.
Developed by Anza, the protocol replaces older components like TowerBFT and Proof-of-History with Votor and Rotor, which enhance block finalization speed and data distribution. Alpenglow is designed to reduce transaction latency to 100–150 milliseconds, putting Solana on par with Web2 infrastructure.
This breakthrough opens doors to real-time blockchain applications such as on-chain gaming and DePIN systems. Currently in prototyping, Alpenglow will hit Solana’s testnet soon, pending community approval via a proposal later this year.
