Ethereum Improvement Proposal 4844 (EIP-4844), also known as Proto-Danksharding, introduces changes to facilitate Ethereum’s scaling through sharding.
Unlike sharding itself, EIP-4844’s primary goal is to lower transaction fees for rollup solutions such as Arbitrum and Optimism, essential components of Ethereum’s scaling strategy in the short term. Proto-Danksharding introduces a “blob-carrying transaction” type, enabling the addition of more data to each transaction, with approximately 0.75 MB per processed block.
These transactions carry lower fees and can prune blockchain storage after two weeks, reducing it. Although the data doesn’t stay indefinitely, it contributes to building the rollup state. Expectations suggest that implementing this scheme will significantly reduce transaction fees, potentially lowering rollup fees by up to 100x and making Ethereum more cost-effective for users.
