Privacy Concerns Surround European Digital Identity Wallet Rollout

The forthcoming implementation of the European Digital Identity Wallet has sparked concerns among analysts and experts who caution against potential risks to the privacy of Europeans.

The focus centers on Article 45 of a leaked Eidas (Electronic Identification, Authentication, and Trust Services) document, revealing that web browsers in Europe must accept digital certificates and cryptographic keys chosen by the European Union (EU), potentially paving the way for online surveillance. Over 500 scientists and researchers, along with organizations like Mozilla, have urged the EU to address these worries.

According to experts, this provision could empower any EU member state or third-party country to intercept web traffic of EU citizens without effective recourse. While the final Eidas document is pending public release, the Mozilla Foundation emphasizes the need for transparency, calling for its disclosure before the voting session on November 28. Despite concerns, the European Commission dismisses the notion of government spying, asserting that the current Eidas iteration poses no risk to internet connection confidentiality.
