Pilot Project Launched by T-Mobile Parent Company to Leverage Surplus Energy for Bitcoin Mining
Deutsche Telekom’s subsidiary, MMS, and Bankhaus Metzler have launched a pilot project to create a Bitcoin (BTC) mining operation using surplus renewable energy.
This initiative aims to harness electricity from renewable sources for BTC mining, building on successful models implemented in the U.S. and Finland. Oliver Nyderle, Head of Digital Trust & Web3 Infrastructure at Deutsche Telekom MMS, emphasized the increasing need for responsive power regulation as the availability of renewable energy fluctuates.
The project aims to validate the regulatory effects of Bitcoin miners on the energy grid, converting surplus energy into digital assets, a process Nyderle refers to as “digital monetary photosynthesis.” Hendrik König, Head of Digital Assets Office at Bankhaus Metzler, highlighted the growing significance of blockchain technology beyond finance and expressed a commitment to advancing it in Germany.
