Alexander Taub, co-founder of Truth, commemorates the entry of Disney’s Mickey Mouse into the public domain by launching a limited edition non-fungible token (NFT) collection on Ethereum.
The NFTs feature one of the first depictions of Mickey Mouse in the 1928 animated short “Steamboat Willie.” With 2,000 identical tokens minted at 0.001 ETH (approximately $2) each, the collection allows content creators to use this version of the character without linking it to Disney or paying rights. However, it only includes the original features from “Steamboat Willie,” excluding later additions like magical traits introduced in Fantasia.
Additionally, an unrelated Mickey-themed meme coin on Ethereum celebrates the character’s public domain status, emphasizing Mickey’s timeless cultural significance. The launch signifies not only Mickey’s release into the public domain but also the commencement of a new digital cultural adventure. Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse is the first version of the character to enter the public domain.
