Lagarde Highlights October 2025 as Key Date for Digital Euro Rollout

ECB President Christine Lagarde announced that the European Central Bank (ECB) aims to complete preparations for the digital euro by October 2025, but its launch depends on legislative approval and stakeholder cooperation.
The ECB is focused on finalizing technical designs, legal frameworks, and gathering feedback during the preparation phase, which began in November 2023. While the digital euro could potentially launch by 2028, it will feature both retail and wholesale components.
The retail version will offer privacy protections and free basic transactions. While the wholesale version will facilitate faster cross-border payments for financial institutions. However, privacy concerns and potential impacts on commercial banks remain ongoing challenges.
