July 2023 Sees Awakening of Dormant Bitcoin Addresses: 8 ‘Sleeping’ Wallets Initiate Transactions
In a surprising turn of events on July 22, 2023, a former dormant bitcoin address, which had been inactive since 2012, suddenly came to life.
This address, containing 1,037.42 BTC, initiated a transaction after 11 years of dormancy. The month of July has witnessed similar occurrences, with a total of eight “sleeping” bitcoin wallets, untouched since 2012, awakening and initiating transactions for the first time. In this month alone, the movement of approximately 1,216.92 BTC that had remained inactive for over a decade occurred. This comes after a series of seven instances of bitcoin activity from 2012, involving dormant wallets, which accounted for a total of 179.50 BTC.
The recipient address of the 1,037.42 BTC had acquired these coins on April 11, 2012, and they had remained untouched ever since. The initial transaction occurred at block height 799,701 on July 22, with the owner injecting a minuscule 0.00000546 BTC into the wallet before transferring the balance, a slightly reduced 1,037.4189247 BTC. The transaction was flagged by btcparser.com and raised concerns about privacy, as Blockchair.com’s privacy tool assigned it a low score of zero out of 100, classified as “critical” due to three significant privacy flaws, including the identification of “matched addresses.”
Alongside the 1,216.92 BTC moved from dormant bitcoin addresses dating back to 2012 this month, there were also three transactions from 2011, accounting for a modest 25 BTC. As July progresses, there have been no reports of bitcoin activity from addresses dormant since 2010, in contrast to June, which witnessed the awakening of three sleeping bitcoin addresses from 2010, totaling 150 BTC.
