Is Europe About to Make Bitcoin Illegal? A Critical Warning

Paymium’s Chief Strategy Officer, Alexandre Stachtchenko, warns that Europe’s proposed data privacy guidelines could make Bitcoin illegal.

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) draft rules classify public keys as personal data, which may require deletion to comply with GDPR. However, blockchain data is immutable and cannot be erased, creating a direct conflict. The EDPB suggests deleting entire blockchains if partial deletion isn’t possible—a technical impossibility. Stachtchenko argues this stance ignores blockchain realities and could criminalize Bitcoin use in Europe. Public feedback is open until June 9 to influence these critical guidelines.
