Gnosis Founder Advocates Native Rollups To Preserve Ethereum’s Decentralized Security
Martin Köppelmann, founder of Gnosis, has proposed implementing a network of 128 “native rollups” to maintain Ethereum’s decentralization and security.
These rollups, built to Ethereum’s high standards, aim to counter the risks posed by centralized layer-2 solutions like Base. Native rollups would integrate deeply with Ethereum’s mainnet, ensuring uncensorable and economically aligned operations, while addressing liquidity and developer fragmentation issues.
At DevCon in Thailand, Köppelmann emphasized the importance of decentralized governance and argued that centralized rollups compromise Ethereum’s security by prioritizing profits. While some industry leaders support the idea, others prefer alternative solutions, such as a sequencer-agnostic proving system. Critics also highlight challenges in scaling and data management, suggesting that native rollups are not a complete solution. However, the proposal has reignited conversations around Ethereum’s future scalability and decentralization.
