Europe’s First Crypto-Based Public Transport System Launches in Toulouse

Toulouse became the first city in France to accept cryptocurrencies for public transport, launching the initiative on March 17, 2025.
The city’s public transport operator, Tisséo, now accepts bitcoin and over 70 other digital currencies for metro, bus, tram, and cable car services via the Tisséo mobile app. Payments are processed in euros instantly through partnerships with fintech firm Lyzi and Binance. The move reflects France’s growing crypto adoption, with 18% of residents owning digital assets in 2024.
However, the system’s Android-only accessibility and tax reporting requirements could limit its widespread use, posing challenges to broader European adoption.
