Europe’s Digital Era: EU’s Pioneering Move Toward Universal Digital ID Wallets
The European Union (EU) has reached a milestone in the implementation of a continent-wide digital ID wallet program as the European Parliament and the Council of the EU finalize their agreement.
Pending ratification at the parliamentary level, the agreement is ready to authorize the issuance of the EU digital ID wallet in alignment with the ‘Europe’s Digital Decade’ framework, focused on digitizing Europe. Thierry Breton, EU’s Commissioner for the Internal Market, announced the news, emphasizing that the European Digital Identity wallet will provide secure e-identities for all citizens. The wallet, designed for both security and privacy, will grant users control over app access to their data. Furthermore, private entities like Amazon and Facebook will need to adhere to European standards for public identification checks using these digital ID services.
Looking ahead, there is potential integration between the digital ID wallet and the Digital Euro, the European central bank digital currency, as hinted by Breton and discussed by Robert Roos, a member of the European Parliament present during the agreement. These developments align with the EU’s broader initiative, “Europe’s Digital Decade,” aimed at digitizing government services, private businesses, and fostering digital literacy. However, the agreement awaits ratification by the European Parliament and its members, with Member States expected to provide EU Digital Identity Wallets to citizens 24 months after the adoption of Implementing Acts specifying technical specifications.
