Ethereum Devs Propose Upgrade to Cut Node Costs and Boost Accessibility

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed a new design to make running a node easier and cheaper for average users. Instead of storing the entire blockchain—currently over 1.3 terabytes—nodes would keep only relevant data and access other information on demand.
This “local-first” model, aligned with Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade, aims to make node operation possible on consumer devices like laptops or even phones. The goal is to reduce reliance on large providers, boost decentralization, and ensure censorship resistance. While the idea brings promise, experts say it needs further testing to address challenges like data availability and system complexity.
