Crypto-Friendly President-Elect Milei Draws Criticism from Varoufakis for Inflation-Fighting Plan

Greece’s former finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, has cast doubt on Argentina’s president-elect, Javier Milei, characterizing him as “no anarcho-capitalist” despite his libertarian image.
Varoufakis likened Milei to Argentina’s past military ruler Jorge Rafael Videla, stating that Milei’s plan to combat inflation through dollarization is drastic, comparing it to “nuking a country to get rid of Covid-19.” Milei has made bold promises, including abolishing the central bank, privatizing the state energy company YPF, and disposing of public broadcast networks, drawing attention from both libertarians and the crypto community.
Despite Milei’s popularity among some bitcoiners and crypto enthusiasts due to his positive remarks about crypto assets, Varoufakis, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), rejected the idea that Milei embodies true anarcho-capitalism. He pointed to American philosopher and author Robert Nozick as a more fitting representative of the anarcho-capitalist philosophy. Additionally, Varoufakis expressed skepticism about Milei’s plan to address Argentina’s inflation through dollarization, using a strong analogy, stating that it’s like resorting to extreme measures to combat a problem, saying, “As for dollarisation vs inflation, it is like nuking a country to get rid of Covid-19. Argentinians deserve our solidarity in the nightmare they are about to descend.”
