The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has outlined its 2024 examination priorities, highlighting a strong focus on cryptocurrency monitoring and examinations.
The SEC’s Division of Examinations will pay close attention to activities involving crypto assets or related products, including their offer, sale, recommendation, advice, and trading. Continued volatility in the cryptocurrency markets drives this initiative, and the SEC will assess whether registrants adhere to their standards of conduct when advising clients on crypto assets.
The regulator also emphasized the need for compliance practices, risk disclosures, and operational resiliency, particularly for crypto wallets, custody, Bank Secrecy Act compliance, and valuation procedures. Additionally, the SEC will scrutinize advisers for compliance with custody requirements under the Advisers Act. The Division of Examinations commits to addressing new and emerging risks, products, services, market events, and investor concerns.
