Core Scientific Shifts Focus from Bitcoin Mining to AI with Major Denton Expansion
Core Scientific is expanding its Denton campus with a $6.1 billion AI project, as the company shifts focus from Bitcoin mining to AI data processing.
Revised lease and power agreements with the city of Denton will secure 394 megawatts of power, up from the previous 297 megawatts, enabling the expansion. This move is part of Core Scientific’s broader strategy to allocate more of its nine U.S.-based data centers to AI applications, with plans to host one of North America’s largest GPU supercomputers.
The Denton city council approved the expansion, allowing Core Scientific to lease an additional 47 acres, bringing the total to 78 acres. The project is expected to create 130 to 300 full-time jobs, with salaries ranging from $70,000 to $75,000 annually. Core Scientific is also pursuing state incentives to help offset costs. After emerging from bankruptcy in January, the company aims to solidify its position as a leading data center provider, with ongoing AI contracts worth $8.7 billion over 12 years. However, the energy-intensive nature of AI projects has raised concerns among local officials about balancing growth with resource management.
