Canadian National Charged in $65M Crypto Heist, Fugitive on the Run
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has indicted Canadian citizen Andean Medjedovic, 22, for allegedly exploiting vulnerabilities in two decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, Kyberswap and Indexed Finance, to steal $65 million from investors.
Between 2021 and 2023, Medjedovic manipulated smart contracts and used deceptive tactics to withdraw funds at artificially generated prices. He laundered the stolen assets through digital swaps and cryptocurrency mixers.
Medjedovic also attempted to extort Kyberswap developers by demanding control of the platform in exchange for returning half of the stolen assets. He faces multiple charges, including wire fraud and money laundering, with a potential 20-year sentence for each count. Medjedovic remains at large.
