BRICS Expansion Gains Momentum as Dozens of Countries Eye Membership

The BRICS economic coalition is nearing an agreement to expand its membership. With South Africa’s ambassador to BRICS saying that a criteria for expansion is already in place. 

The group’s foreign ministers are expected to make a statement on the expansion at a summit in Johannesburg.Sooklal said that the group has been focusing on building criteria and modalities for expansion since last year’s BRICS Summit in China. He said that the type of expansion is ultimately up to the foreign ministers of BRICS. But that up to 44 countries are now interested in joining the coalition.

The expansion of BRICS is seen as a way for the group to increase its influence and power on the global stage. It is also seen as a way for BRICS to counter the influence of the West.
