BRICS Economic Bloc Extends Invitations to 69 Global Leaders for Largest Summit

The BRICS economic bloc is gearing up to host its most significant summit yet, as it has already extended invitations to 69 leaders for the event in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24.
Notably, the organizers have invited all 54 African heads of state and leaders of major Global South bodies, while excluding Western nations such as the U.S., U.K., and France from the invitations. The bloc’s engagement in Africa and commitment to foster development on the continent, particularly in advancing the continental free trade agreement, drove South Africa’s decision to invite the entire African continent and major Global South bodies.
Additionally, over 40 countries have shown interest in joining BRICS, with 22 nations having submitted formal applications. Discussions during the summit will also encompass “deepening interaction in trading in local currencies,” reflecting the interest in reducing dependence on the dollar.
