Bitcoin Ponzi Scheme Architect from South Africa Dies of Heart Attack in Brazilian Detainment
Johann Steynberg, the mastermind behind a South African bitcoin Ponzi scheme. Passed away due to pulmonary thromboembolism while under house arrest on a farm in Brazil.
Steynberg, CEO of the bitcoin investment platform Mirror Trading International (MTI), was awaiting an extradition hearing after having his jail sentence commuted. However, doubts have arisen about his reported death. With some suggesting it could be staged.
Concerns about Steynberg’s mental health were also raised, with reports indicating worsening conditions leading to a panic attack before his fatal heart attack. His Brazilian wife stated that he had no assets to be inventoried and left no will.
