Bitcoin Mining Hits Eco-Milestone: 52% Powered by Renewable Energy

A new report from the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance reveals that the U.S. and Canada control over 80% of global bitcoin mining, with the U.S. alone holding 75.4%.
Bitcoin mining has shifted towards more sustainable energy, now relying on 52.4% renewable sources, with hydropower (23.4%) and wind (15.4%) being the leading contributors. Despite this, bitcoin’s annual power consumption rose 17%, reaching 138 terawatt-hours, or 0.54% of global electricity use.
Miners face rising energy costs and are looking to diversify, with strategies like using flared gas and recovering waste heat to stay viable.
