Bitcoin Mining Faces Broader Crackdown in Russia

Three additional regions in Russia—Karelia, Penza, and Khakassia—have applied for restrictions on bitcoin mining due to concerns over high energy consumption.
The Ministry of Finance has not yet decided whether these regions will impose a full ban or only restrict mining during the heating season. The move follows similar actions by other regions like Dagestan and Chechnya, where power outages linked to illegal mining have strained infrastructure. Some critics argue that the restrictions could push miners underground, making it harder for authorities to monitor and control energy use. However, in areas like Siberia, the measures have led to a significant reduction in energy demand, helping prevent broader power restrictions.
