Bitcoin Fund Misuse Leads to Disbarment of Lawyer
Attorney Diana McDonald was disbarred by the Supreme Court of Georgia on June 11 for misappropriating $4 million in a bitcoin escrow transaction.
Acting as a fiduciary in 2019, McDonald failed to deliver promised cryptocurrency to a client and instead diverted the funds to personal accounts, family, friends, and other entities. Despite assuring the funds’ safety. Although a third party recovered $2.4 million, $1.6 million remained unrecovered.
The court found McDonald guilty of multiple professional conduct violations. Including dishonesty, fraud, and failure to safeguard client funds. Her request for voluntary retirement was rejected, leading to unanimous disbarment by the court.
