Assad advocates for Chinese yuan as global trade currency at BRICS meeting
President Bashar Assad of Syria believes that the BRICS nations should lead the charge in ditching the US dollar for international transactions. During a meeting with China’s Special Envoy for the Middle East, Assad praised China’s efforts to improve relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, both of which are applying for membership in BRICS. According to Assad, the whole world needs China’s political and economic presence to rebalance the global situation.
He believes the BRICS alliance has the potential to create an international multipolar order. The Chinese official assured Assad that Beijing will continue to support Damascus and its battle against hegemony, terrorism, and external interference. China has been trying to expand its global influence by promoting the use of the yuan in international trade and reducing dependence on the US dollar.
