Visa Revolutionizes Ethereum Transactions with Direct Fiat Payment for Gas Fees

Visa has introduced an innovative solution utilizing Ethereum’s ERC-4337 account abstraction standard and a “paymaster” smart contract feature to enable direct payment of on-chain Ethereum gas fees using fiat currencies through credit or debit cards.
The company conducted successful testing on the Ethereum Goerli testnet, employing a paymaster contract to sponsor gas fees on users’ behalf. This approach eliminates the need for users to maintain an ETH balance for transactions, significantly increasing accessibility.
Visa’s technical team views this experiment as a promising strategy to address blockchain-based transaction challenges. A paymaster contract oversees gas fee settlements, offering merchants, decentralized applications (Dapps), and wallet service providers the option to implement this feature. This move aligns with Visa’s ongoing commitment to enhancing blockchain-based payments’ user-friendliness and accessibility, building on their previous efforts in the field.
