USDT Premium in India Surges Above 8.5% as Supply Crunch Tightens Stablecoin Market

The price of Tether’s USDT has surged to an unusually high premium of more than 8.5% in India following a regulatory crackdown that disrupted the local supply of the world’s largest stablecoin.

The spike comes after Indian authorities targeted several firms allegedly involved in unauthorized cross-border transactions using USDT, reducing access to dollar-backed digital assets and creating a liquidity shortage. As a result, Indian traders are paying significantly more than the official exchange rate to acquire USDT, highlighting strong demand for dollar-denominated assets despite tighter regulatory oversight.

Analysts say the premium reflects local supply constraints rather than any issue with USDT’s global dollar peg, underscoring how policy actions and limited market access can have a major impact on stablecoin pricing within specific regions.
