US Senators Press 25 Major Banks on Overdraft Fees After Rule Reversal

A group of U.S. senators, led by Elizabeth Warren, has sent letters to 25 major banks—including JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America—demanding answers on overdraft fee practices.
The inquiry follows the repeal of a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) rule that had capped overdraft charges at $5, a move critics say would have saved consumers up to $3.5 billion annually. Senators Warren, Richard Blumenthal. And Bernie Sanders argue that overdraft and non-sufficient fund fees disproportionately impact lower- and middle-income households. Often leading to repeated charges and even account closures.
They warn the law’s reversal could fuel “debanking,” stripping more Americans of access to financial services. The banks have been asked to respond by September 12.
