Unprecedented 2010 Bitcoin Block Reward Transfer Marks Ninth Occurrence This Year

On July 24, 2023, the world of cryptocurrency witnessed a significant event as someone transferred a 2010 block reward for the first time in 13 years.
This marked the ninth expenditure of dormant bitcoins from that year in the current year alone, resulting in the transfer of 450 bitcoins. The transaction, as reported by btcparser.com, involved the transfer of 50 bitcoins to an undisclosed address. Though the amount may not seem substantial, it holds a value of $1.4 million. Such expenditure of bitcoins from 2010 has become rare nowadays, considering that back in 2010, 50 bitcoins were essentially of little value, not even reaching the five-cent mark until July 17, 2010.
The funds were transferred to a specific bitcoin address and then further moved from there. However, the transaction scored poorly on privacy, receiving only 5 out of 100 according to Blockchair’s privacy tool. The analysis identified three issues, including the sweeping of funds, the repetition of the same address in the inputs, and the presence of diverse input types.
This marked the ninth such occurrence of a 2010 block reward transfer in 2023. On June 26, previous transactions from this era involved making two transfers totaling 100 bitcoins. The acquisition of both block rewards on the same day, July 12, 2010, indicates a possible link between the transfers.
Among the nine transfers this year, only eight originated from completely untouched, dormant bitcoin rewards. One transaction on April 22, 2023, involved a 50-bitcoin block reward, but the address had previously spent a small amount from the wallet on August 10, 2021. The remaining eight transactions, including the recent one on July 24, 2023, consisted of entirely untouched block rewards that had remained dormant for 13 years.
