UN Secretary General Urges Overhaul of Outdated Financial System at BRICS Summit

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations (U.N.), has emphasized the urgency of adapting current financial institutions to the evolving multilateral world.

Speaking at the recent BRICS leaders summit in Johannesburg, Guterres advocated for embracing cooperation and multilateralism in a shifting global landscape. He stressed the need to build a strengthened and reformed multilateral architecture based on the U.N. Charter and international law. Guterres criticized existing institutions as outdated and inadequate for the present global configuration, highlighting the necessity of reforms that align with contemporary power dynamics and economic realities. Specifically, he called for the reform of institutions like the U.N. Security Council and the Bretton Woods institutions, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Guterres acknowledged the complexities of such reform in today’s geopolitical context but underscored the importance of practical action. The BRICS bloc, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has been striving to establish an alternative financial architecture that moves away from traditional Western power centers and the dominance of the U.S. dollar, aligning with the bloc’s recent “Johannesburg II Declaration.”
