UK Reveals 240 Crypto Millionaires as HMRC Tightens Tax Oversight

The U.K. has published its first official statistics on taxable crypto gains, revealing that 240 individuals reported more than £1 million each in crypto capital gains during the 2024–25 tax year.
Together, this group generated £717 million in gains, accounting for more than half of the £1.38 billion reported by 17,600 crypto taxpayers. Total crypto disposal proceeds reached £13.8 billion, with the average taxable gain around £78,000 per person.
The figures arrive as HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) intensifies oversight of crypto investors. From 2027, exchanges and other crypto service providers will begin reporting qualifying customer and transaction data under the international Cryptoasset Reporting Framework (CARF). The shift gives HMRC greater visibility into previously undeclared activity and signals that crypto taxation is becoming increasingly integrated into the U.K.’s mainstream tax enforcement system.
