UK Defers Capital Gains Tax on Crypto Lending Until Assets Are Economically Disposed

The UK’s HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has confirmed new tax rules that will defer Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on eligible crypto lending. And decentralized finance (DeFi) transactions until investors make an actual economic disposal of their assets.

Under the updated framework. Simply depositing cryptocurrencies into qualifying lending protocols or liquidity pools will no longer trigger an immediate taxable event. With gains instead recognized only when the assets are ultimately sold, exchanged. Or otherwise disposed of for economic value. The rules which are scheduled to take effect from 6 April 2027, are intended to simplify crypto taxation and remove uncertainty for DeFi users while maintaining tax obligations when profits are eventually realized. The policy is widely viewed as a positive step for the UK’s digital asset industry. Providing greater clarity for investors and supporting innovation in decentralized finance. Without creating immediate tax burdens for routine on-chain activities.
