UBS Predicts Prolonged U.S. Dollar Dominance Despite Emerging Competition

Swiss investment banking giant UBS predicts a continued era of U.S. dollar dominance, asserting that the world will largely revolve around the U.S. dollar for years ahead
Alejo Czerwonko, Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer of UBS Global Wealth Management’s Emerging Markets Americas, emphasized that the bank firmly anticipates a U.S. dollar-centric global landscape persisting for the foreseeable future, while acknowledging the potential for emerging competitors.
Czerwonko provided three key reasons to support this outlook. Firstly, he highlighted the historical resilience of global currency regimes, underscoring that shifts in dominant currencies transpire gradually and often outlast shifts in economic influence. The U.S. dollar’s steadfast dominance in financial markets and international trade bolsters its stability.
Secondly, Czerwonko emphasized the critical importance of liquidity, ranking as a top priority for global reserve managers and international traders. He reiterated the U.S. dollar’s preeminence in this regard. Lastly, Czerwonko highlighted the enduring strengths of the U.S. financial and political system, citing factors such as rule of law, regulatory quality, and market openness.
Concluding, UBS is confident in the U.S. dollar’s ongoing supremacy, while acknowledging that competition may emerge. Czerwonko noted that geopolitical tensions could prompt adjustments in the global currency order, but there is no single currency poised for exclusive benefit.
