Toyota Embraces USDT in Bolivia as Tether Shuts Down Uruguay Mining

Latin America saw major crypto developments this week as Toyota and Yamaha began accepting USDT payments in Bolivia, while Tether announced its exit from mining operations in Uruguay.
Toyosa, the exclusive dealer for Toyota, Lexus, Yamaha, and BYD in Bolivia, has introduced USDT as a payment option for cars and motorcycles. Partnering with Bitgo for custody and Towerbank for transaction processing, Toyosa says the initiative is the first large-scale integration of USDT payments by an automotive company in Latin America, and among the first globally. The move reflects the growing popularity of stablecoins in the region, especially for customers with limited access to cash.
Meanwhile, Tether is winding down its mining activities in Uruguay after failing to secure favorable conditions with the state power company, UTE. Tether had hoped to make Uruguay a regional mining hub, but stalled negotiations over tariffs and power tolls made the project economically unviable. Talks began in 2023, and by 2024 the company warned UTE that failure to agree could force its exit. Now, after unsuccessful attempts, Tether is closing its operations in the country.
