Taiwan Verdict: Eight Individuals Convicted in Espionage Case Involving Cryptocurrency

Taiwan’s high court convicted eight individuals. Including military personnel, of espionage for China on Thursday, with payments reportedly made in cryptocurrency.
Sentences range from 1.5 to 13 years in prison; one person was acquitted and another is still at large. The Ministry of Justice’s Investigation Bureau revealed that the Chinese Communist Party recruited these individuals to collect military intelligence, using virtual currency to hide transactions.
This case highlights the increasing use of cryptocurrency in covert operations and its role in complicating detection. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry has vowed to enhance efforts to prevent further espionage.
