Study Finds Crypto Owners Show Higher Propensity for ‘Dark’ Personality Traits
A recent study published in PLOS One by researchers from the University of Toronto and the University of Miami has revealed that cryptocurrency ownership correlates with belief in conspiracy theories and what are termed “dark” personality traits such as narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism, collectively known as the “Dark Tetrad.”
The study surveyed 2,001 American adults and found that 30% had owned cryptocurrency, showing diverse political affiliations and a preference for alternative social media platforms. The research suggests that male gender, reliance on fringe social media for news, argumentativeness, and aversion to authoritarianism are strong predictors of cryptocurrency ownership.
It highlights the complex political attitudes and psychological profiles associated with crypto purchasers, challenging previous assumptions linking cryptocurrencies primarily with far-right ideologies.
