South African Reserve Bank Warns Crypto and Stablecoins Pose Structural Risk

The South African Reserve Bank has warned that cryptocurrencies and stablecoins now present a structural risk to the country’s financial system.

In its latest Financial Stability Review, the central bank noted rapid growth in local crypto participation, with major exchanges serving millions of users and holding a rising share of household financial assets. SARB raised concerns that the fast adoption of stablecoins, especially USD-pegged tokens, could allow users to bypass exchange-control rules and move money across borders without oversight.

The bank also highlighted a shift in market behavior, where trading volumes have moved away from traditional cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin toward stablecoin pairs. According to SARB, this trend increases potential vulnerabilities in the absence of clear regulation and comprehensive risk management standards. The central bank said it will continue monitoring the sector and may introduce additional measures to safeguard financial stability.
