Robinhood Chain Sparks Solana, Arbitrum and BNB Debate Over Sustainable Blockchain Fees

Robinhood Chain’s fee model has triggered a broader debate over how blockchain networks should generate sustainable revenue.

Built using Arbitrum technology, Robinhood retains roughly 90% of its protocol net revenue, while 10% goes back to the Arbitrum ecosystem—8% to the Arbitrum DAO and 2% to its developer funding program. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko argued Robinhood could instead use Solana’s low-cost infrastructure and subsidize user transactions, while Offchain Labs co-founder Steven Goldfeder defended the model because it allows Robinhood to capture revenue generated across its own network.

The discussion expanded when BNB Chain executive Nina Rong argued that continually lowering gas fees is no longer the industry’s biggest priority. Instead, blockchains need sustainable business models—through gas fees, revenue sharing or other commercial agreements—to fund long-term technology and ecosystem growth. The debate highlights an important shift in blockchain competition: networks are increasingly competing not just on speed and low fees, but on who can build a financially sustainable ecosystem while still attracting users and developers.
