Peru’s Credit Bank Completes First Bank-Issued Crypto Payment in Pilot

The Peruvian Credit Bank (BCP) has successfully carried out the country’s first bank-originated cryptocurrency payment as part of an internal pilot program.
A bank employee used a token called GIFT, issued on the Polygon network. To purchase a coffee at the bank’s cafeteria. While the token is restricted to internal use and not tradable, BCP says the trial helps assess how users unfamiliar with crypto navigate wallets, tokens, and QR-based payments. The pilot avoided market volatility risks by abstracting complexity for participants, with Fireblocks providing backend infrastructure.
BCP’s blockchain lead, Lenin Carrillo, said the test sets a precedent for future services. Noting that the bank is exploring potential applications in remittances and cross-border payments once regulation in Peru is established.
