OpenClaw Creator Joins OpenAI as OpenClaw Becomes Foundation-Backed Open-Source Project
Peter Steinberger, the creator of the viral open-source AI agent OpenClaw, is joining OpenAI to lead development of next-generation personal AI agents as the project transitions into a foundation-supported initiative.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Steinberger’s expertise will help shape smarter agent systems that can autonomously perform real-world tasks and could become central to future product offerings.
OpenClaw, originally known as Clawdbot and Moltbot, gained attention for its ability to execute tasks such as managing emails and messaging via AI agents, drawing significant community engagement on open-source platforms. Under the new arrangement, the tool will remain an open-source foundation with continued support from OpenAI, reflecting a broader commitment to collaborative AI development and multi-agent ecosystems.
