Nigeria Explores Domestic Blockchain Solutions for Enhanced Data Security
Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is pushing forward with plans to develop a domestic blockchain. Dubbed “Nigerium,” aimed at bolstering national security and safeguarding citizen data.
NITDA Director General Kashifu Abdullahi underscores the need for a locally built blockchain to ensure compliance with Nigerian laws and assert greater control over data sovereignty. The initiative aligns with proposals from Chanu Kuppuswamy and collaborators at the University of Hertfordshire Law School. Advocating for Nigerium as a strategic alternative to foreign platforms like Ethereum. Which they argue pose risks due to lack of Nigerian influence.
Kuppuswamy also proposes establishing a data embassy in a neutral third country to enhance data security against cyber threats. Collaboration between NITDA and various stakeholders from both public and private sectors is anticipated, although specifics on the project’s timeline remain undisclosed.
