Netherlands Bans Polymarket for Offering Illegal Gambling Services

Dutch authorities have banned access to Polymarket, citing the prediction market platform’s operations as illegal gambling services under national law.

Regulators argue that Polymarket’s event-based betting features, including markets tied to political and economic outcomes, fall outside permitted financial activities and pose risks to consumer protection and responsible gaming standards.

The enforcement action reflects broader efforts by the Netherlands’ gambling regulator to clamp down on online platforms that accept bets without proper licensing and oversight. Polymarket must now comply with local regulations or face further sanctions, raising questions about how prediction markets will adapt to increasingly strict national rules across Europe and beyond.
