Nasdaq Sets December 6 Launch for Nearly 23-Hour Stock Trading

Nasdaq is preparing to dramatically extend U.S. stock-market access by launching a new overnight trading session on Dec. 6, 2026, bringing trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market to nearly 23 hours a day, five days a week.

The new session will run from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. ET, complementing the existing pre-market, regular, and after-hours sessions and leaving only a one-hour daily pause from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET for maintenance and processing. Nasdaq says the expansion is driven by rapidly growing international demand for U.S. equities, allowing investors across Asia and Europe to trade American stocks during their normal daytime hours rather than waiting for U.S. markets to open.

The overnight session will operate primarily as a limit-order market, with market orders and several other order types unavailable during the new trading window, reflecting concerns around liquidity and volatility outside traditional U.S. hours. The move also brings traditional equity markets closer to the near-continuous trading model long associated with cryptocurrency, as exchanges compete for increasingly global and always-on investor demand. While Nasdaq’s regular 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. ET session will remain the primary price-discovery window, the December expansion represents one of the biggest structural changes to U.S. stock-market trading hours in decades and could further blur the boundaries between traditional securities and 24/7 digital-asset markets.
