Mzansi Web3 Hub and University of Zimbabwe Host Pioneering Blockchain Event

In a groundbreaking collaboration, the University of Zimbabwe, in partnership with South Africa’s Mzansi Web3 Hub, organized its inaugural blockchain hackathon on December 8 and 9.

The event attracted overwhelming interest, with 175 students from various faculties and course stages participating. Taurayi Rupere, the chairman of the computer science department, expressed the hackathon’s aim to cultivate “open-minded” developers who “think outside the box.” Originally targeting computer science students, the event’s popularity prompted an extension of invitations to students from diverse fields. Rupere discussed potential university initiatives to enhance blockchain education, emphasizing the hope that the hackathon becomes a recurring event.

Shaheer Karrim, founder of Mzansi Web3 Hub, expressed optimism that their educational initiatives would bolster the younger generation’s understanding and skills in blockchain technology, contributing to Africa’s active participation in the global digital revolution. Karrim highlighted the role of the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) in popularizing blockchain technology in Southern Africa and globally. The ongoing efforts, including hackathons, aim to introduce the ICP to students and prepare African youth for the impending digital revolution.
