Bridging Ethereum and Polygon Networks

Metamask is an excellent wallet that lets you store your cryptocurrency and make purchases. But, when it comes to spending or sending your crypto, it is crucial that your wallet is on the correct network. Sometimes exchanges like Coinbase do not give you the option to choose which Metamask network your currency goes to, which can limit your options for purchasing NFTs on other blockchains.

Don’t worry though, we’re here to help. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to transfer your currencies between Ethereum and Polygon using bridges. This process is called “bridging,” and it allows you to move your Matic tokens from the Ethereum Mainnet to the Polygon Mainnet, making it available for use on a wide range of marketplaces.

Assuming you’ve already started your crypto journey, set up a Metamask wallet, and deposited funds into it, this guide will break down each step of the process so that you can easily bridge your networks and access more NFT options. And if you haven’t completed any of these steps yet, no worries! We have guides for that too, which you can find on our website.

If you want to bridge the Ethereum and Polygon Mainnets, you’ll need to make sure that you have both Matic and Ethereum (ETH) in your Metamask wallet to cover the GAS fees. Once you’ve done that, head over to the Polygon Wallet website and click “Connect to a Wallet” in the top right corner to link your Metamask wallet. From there, click on “Polygon Bridge” to be taken to the transfer page.

On this page, you’ll need to select the currency you want to transfer, in this case, “ether.” Then choose the amount you want to send and click the “Transfer” button. You’ll see a pop-up with important information about your transaction, including the GAS fees. Be sure to read this information carefully before clicking “Continue.”

Once you’ve confirmed the approximate GAS fees, you’ll see a preview of your transfer before the transaction takes place. You’ll be presented with the complete transfer, the transfer mode, and the estimated transaction fee. If you’re happy with everything, click “Continue” to begin the transfer.

You’ll then see a pop-up from Metamask asking you to confirm the transaction. This is your last chance to cancel, so make sure you’re ready before clicking “Confirm.” The transaction will then begin, and you’ll see a Polygon pop-up displaying the current status of your transfer.

The transfer process is split into two transactions: approval and confirmation. Once both are completed, your transaction will be in process, and you’ll be able to see it in your Metamask wallet. It may take some time to complete, depending on the network traffic, but rest assured, it will go through.

When your transfer is completed successfully, you’ll see a peace sign on the page. Your MATIC has been transferred from your Ethereum Mainnet wallet to the Polygon Mainnet wallet and is ready to use. Simply access your Metamask wallet, select “Polygon Mainnet” from the drop-down menu, and you should see your transferred Polygon available for use.
