JPMorgan Warns Fed Independence Could Be Undermined as U.S. Seeks to Inflate Debt

JPMorgan Chase cautions that the independence of the Federal Reserve may be at risk as U.S. policymakers consider “inflating away” the federal debt.

The bank’s analysis suggests the U.S. government might tolerate higher inflation and lower real interest rates to reduce the real value of its obligations, a strategy known as financial repression.

While this approach could shrink the debt burden over time, it comes with trade-offs: diminished central-bank autonomy, weaker inflation control, and increased uncertainty for investors. JPMorgan warns that any erosion of the Fed’s independence could challenge long-term stability and complicate the path to sustainable economic growth.
