Irish Central Bank Fines Coinbase Europe €21.5 Million for AML Compliance Failures

The Central Bank of Ireland has fined Coinbase Europe Limited €21.5 million after uncovering serious weaknesses in the company’s anti–money laundering (AML) monitoring systems.

Regulators found that Coinbase failed to properly track more than €176 billion worth of transactions over a 12-month period due to software and system errors.

According to the investigation, approximately one-third of the company’s transaction volume went unmonitored, delaying thousands of suspicious activity reports related to potential money laundering, fraud, and cybercrime. Coinbase has acknowledged the failures, accepted the penalty, and pledged to implement stronger compliance frameworks. The fine marks one of the most significant enforcement actions against a cryptocurrency exchange in Europe, underscoring the growing scrutiny of digital asset firms under EU financial regulations.
