Hong Kong Bolsters Crypto Regulation Amid Mainland Investor Surge

Hong Kong is taking proactive steps to enhance the regulation of over-the-counter (OTC) cryptocurrency trading, aiming to address the increasing interest of mainland investors utilizing the city as a conduit for crypto investments.

Joseph Chan Ho-lim, the Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the risks associated with virtual assets amid the growing interest from mainland investors. This move comes as Chinese investors seek alternatives to the sluggish national stock market, utilizing Hong Kong-based platforms to navigate the crypto trading ban imposed in mainland China in 2021.

While local sources did not specify the readiness of these new determinations for OTC markets, Hong Kong’s approach to cryptocurrency stands in contrast to mainland China’s, with recent regulations by the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission paving the way for spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETF) issuance in the region. The SFC recognizes the popularity and demand for virtual assets in Hong Kong.
